Commercial integration in the Mexico’s agro-food industry within the framework of NAFTA

dc.descriptionNAFTA has facilitated trade among member countries by defining the rules of the game, but its contribution to economic development and welfare has not been clearly demonstrated. Traditional models of international trade predict that in the face of free trade, if countries maintain large differences in their capital/labor ratio, it is to be expected that trade be based on comparative advantages and be of the interindustrial type. This causes structural adjustments in the different sectors and is accompanied by high social costs due to restructuring, as opposed to intraindustrial specialization. This could explain the phenomenon of the breaking up of productive chains in the Mexican agricultural sector, as evidenced by the growth of the foods industry at the expense of primary agricultural imports, increasing dependence on the external market.en-US
dc.descriptionEl TLCAN ha facilitado el comercio entre los países socios al definir las reglas del juego, pero aún no está demostrada claramente su contribución al desarrollo económico y bienestar. Los modelos tradicionales de comercio internacional predicen que en presencia de libre comercio, si los países mantienen grandes diferencias en su relación capital-trabajo, es de esperar que el comercio se base en las ventajas comparativas y sea del tipo interindustrial, provocando ajustes estructurales en los sectores acompañados de altos costos sociales por la reestructuración, a diferencia de la especialización intraindustrial. Ésta puede ser una explicación causal del fenómeno de la desarticulación de las cadenas productivas del sector agroalimentario mexicano, manifestado por el crecimiento de la industria de alimentos a expensas de las importaciones de materias primas agrícolas, aumentando la dependencia al mercado exterior.
