Expansion of the geographical distribution of the Caribbean reef octopus (Octopus briareus) to the Gulf of Mexico

dc.descriptionA specimen of Octopus briareus was registered in front of the port of Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico. This finding represents the first recording of this species in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, thus expanding its westernmost recognized distribution area on the American continent. The octopus was captured by scientific divers performing routine maintenance at underwater facilities in the area of the discovery. The specimen collected was a female adult weighing 25.3 g. Further exploration in the area and those adjacent to it are required to determine the causes of this species’ displacement and calculate its abundance.en-US
dc.descriptionUn espécimen de Octopus briareus se registró frente al puerto de Sisal, Yucatán, México. Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de esta especie en aguas del Golfo de México, expandiendo así su área de distribución más occidental reconocida en el continente americano. El pulpo fue capturado por buzos científicos que realizaban tareas de mantenimiento de rutina en instalaciones submarinas en el área del descubrimiento. El espécimen recogido fue una hembra adulta que pesaba 25,3 g. Se requiere una mayor exploración en el área y en zonas adyacentes para determinar las causas del desplazamiento de esta especie y calcular su abundancia.es-ES
