Abstract

Broadly speaking, the presentation provides brief biographical overviews of Ludwig Prandtl, Heinrich Blasius, Ernst Pohlhausen and Theodore von Kármán. Here, the boundary layer equations are established by checking the orders of magnitude and then made simpler using the similarity hypothesis for their solution. Next, an example of how to estimate the boundary layer thickness is presented, along with a plot of the velocity profile. This topic is relevant when estimating the size of the first mesh element attached to the solid boundary in a CFD analysis.
